Test Positioning
When measuring ROM, it is extremely important to use bony landmarks in order to correctly position and align the goniometer. This increases reliability of measurements taken over time or by another therapist because they serve as a reference point. Positioning the client properly for full ROM is essential. If the position restricts ROM, the measurement is unreliable.
When using MMT the position of the client and the limb must be considered. It is important to position the client in a safe and comfortable position. The therapist must also take into consideration the different test positions when testing against gravity or gravity is eliminated. Proper test positioning will increase reliability of measurements. The limb/joint is positioned for optimal contraction, which is midrange of motion because there are more cross-bridges formed. The gravity eliminated position is especially significant for people who are unable to move through full ROM or hold the position against gravity. In the gravity eliminated position there is no resistance and the movement is parallel to the ground so client will not have to overcome the force of gravity.
