Posture & Body Mechanics

Proper posture and body mechanics protect the body from possible injury and pain. Faulty posture and poor body mechanics can increase the risk low back pain, which 80% of the adult population experiences at some point. Proper alignment while completing activities allows muscles to function ideally and transmit weight properly. Abnormal posture can impact movement and function. In addition, proper posture and body mechanics can reduce the risk of a disc injury and improve quality of life.

I would use the slouch-overcorrect technique as an intervention to teach proper posture. I would use this technique so my client can feel what it is like to have correct sitting posture. Clients can also use support such as a pillow or towel to help them maintain posture.

I would teach a client how to use proper body mechanics by demonstrating proper lifting techniques to keep the body safe. I would emphasize the importance of lifting with your legs and avoid rotating movements. Body mechanics can also be improved by encouraging the client to alternate hands if frequently doing repetitive motions.
